For the first time in the 600 year history of Morris dancing, Morris sides across the country have combined efforts to raise money for a national charity. As a result, BBC Children in Need will benefit to the tune of £10,000.
The Joint Morris Organisations (JMO) were aware that their members have raised money for local charities and hospices for many years. Said Past JMO Chair, Peter Halfpenney: “We were very careful to ensure that a national fundraiser would not detract from established local efforts. Our members have responded generously and staged dancing and other events all over the country to boost this appeal.”
"On Saturday, 1st June, my home side, the Harthill Morris, are hosting a dance spectacular in Sheffield and will be joined by three guest Morris sides from the region. At 12.30 outside the Town Hall we shall be presenting a cheque for £10,000 to Children in Need. Actor and TV presenter Matthew Kelly has taken time out from his Crucible Theatre engagement where he is appearing in Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play, ‘The History Boys’, and has graciously agreed to accept the proceeds of the appeal on behalf of the Charity."
Said Matthew: “This is a fantastic gift from the Morris. It will make an appreciable difference to so many children and I applaud their brilliant fund raising efforts.”
Matthew will be accompanied by Pudsey Bear in person for the ceremony.”

So successful has been the Morris response to support Children in Need that we have decided to repeat the appeal this year.
