Traditional Morris Events: Late Spring Bank Holiday/Whisuntide

Instructions have been issued by the Government regarding the Coronavirus epidemic.  They advise against unnecessary travel or social contact for the foreseeable future.

Although these restrictions are voluntary, we as an Organisation must put the welfare of our members, their families and our communities first.

Many sides are postponing practices and events even some months ahead are being cancelled

We have urged all sides to take this Government advice seriously and act accordingly and it is highly unlikely any traditional events will be  performed - other than virtually on Facebook!

To a great extent the majority of traditional Whitsuntide events have migrated to the Late Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May. Pentecost or Whitsun is observed on the seventh Sunday after Easter. {The Greek "pentekoste" meaning the fiftieth day after Easter} Whit Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the Apostles, as recorded in the New Testament. The adoption of a late Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday in May attempts to deal with the fact that Whitsuntide is a moveable feast dependent on the date of Easter. Thus the Whit Monday holiday is no longer necessarily at the church's Whitsuntide. As always, check for the actual date of the event.
