An invitation to all Morris musicians - Playing for Country Dancing course
Across the country, Morris sides rely on skilled players who understand how music drives dancers — and this course offers a rare opportunity for those musicians to refresh and expand that craft. While not Morris-specific, this weekend focuses deeply on the core principles of playing for dance: lift, rhythm, clarity, expression, and connection. Pianist Jacqueline Schwab and her team will guide musicians through approaches that can enrich any dance tradition, including Morris.
Participants will:
- Explore contemporary English dance styles
- Develop stronger rhythmic drive and melodic lift
- Create basslines and improvised variations
- Work collaboratively in ensembles
- Reconnect with the heart of playing for dancers, not just at them
For confident players who want space to develop technique, creativity, and a deeper musical understanding of dance, this course may offer exactly the inspiration you’ve been seeking.
The course dates are - Fri 29th - Sun 31st May, 2026, and here is the link to book: https://www.halswaymanor.org.uk/event/playing-for-dancing-2026
