Robin Springett's swan song - and dance.
2014 marks the 80th anniversary of the Morris Ring. Over the weekend 5th to 7th of September, Dartington Morris Men will be hosting, in Dartmouth, the 343rd Meeting of Morris Ring Clubs. Nearly two hundred Morris Men and musicians from all parts of the country will descend on South Devon and Dartmouth in particular. On Friday night, pubs in Dartmouth will ring to Morris music and singing. On the Saturday, tours will take dancers to Brixham, Paignton, Torquay, Totnes and the surrounding countryside. Many dance spots will be close to hostelries to avoid the dangers of dehydration. The various tours will come together in Totnes and dance on the Plains; then gather for the 16.15 river boat to Dartmouth, where later that evening DMM will entertain the other Morris sides and official guests at a Feast to be held at ‘The View Restaurant’ in Dartmouth Academy.
The weekend culminates on Sunday with a visit to Britannia Royal Naval College, a church service at St Saviour's Church, and Massed Dancing in Royal Avenue Gardens near the Bandstand. Robin will officially “Dance Out” from his role as Squire, and his successor, Adam Garland from East Suffolk Morris Men will “Dance In” to start his two year tenure. Refreshments will be available for performers and spectators alike.
